First Date Advice

Whether you meet someone through online dating or through a mutual acquaintance, the first date can always cause a bit of anxiety. If you’re not nervous than you are definitely an exception. You always want to make the very best first impression possible on your first date. There are several basic things to keep in mind before meeting your date:

  • Fresh breath – This is a must. Be sure to floss, brush, and use mouthwash. Chew gum or pop a mint on the way. Always carry gum or mints, especially for them moments after eating a meal.
  • Dress appropriately – If you’re doing fine dining, then dress the part. If it is a more casual date, keep your clothing casual but neat. Make sure your outfit makes you feel confident.
  • Be willing to pick up the bill – Regardless if you’re male or female, one should never assume that the other is picking up the bill. At least offer to pay half or offer to buy coffee/dessert.
  • Choose your food wisely – Most first dates involve dining out. Do not eat food that you know will disagree with you later. This particularly goes for dairy products as most people are lactose intolerant. The last thing you want is to have a gassy feeling after your meal.

Conversation Starters

You want to keep your date as interested as possible. Awkward silences will happen but can be avoided for the most part if you are willing to ask plenty of questions. Your goal should be to get to know as much as you can about your date. Some good conversation starters include questions about:

  • Career
  • Family (children, siblings, etc.)
  • Where they are from
  • Favorite sports (teams, etc.)
  • Travel
  • Favorite food
  • Favorite local hangouts
  • Area they live in
  • Future goals
  • Physical fitness

Once you start a conversation, it is relatively easy to keep it going as you can begin to ask questions from the answers that are given. You are also able to chime in with your own experiences and opinions.

The key to a good first date is plenty of conversation. Your date wants to know just as much about you, however, keep in mind that people generally love to talk about themselves so don’t be afraid to ask the questions.
