Good First Date Conversation Starters

by Dating Spree on October 8, 2011

One of the biggest worries for most people going on their first date is, “What will we talk about?” This is a common worry because nothing is worse than long periods of awkward silence. If you can’t keep a conversation going, your date may think that you are not interesting and definitely can’t hold a conversation. Your date may also not be super talkative or just as nervous as you. It’s important to go into the date prepared with conversation starters that can have you both chatting for hours.

List of Topics to Discuss on a First Date

Below is a basic list of topics that can keep you both talking with the minimum amount of awkward silences. Keep in mind that once you start a topic, it is easy to keep going as you can voice your opinion or ask even more questions depending on their answer.

  • Place of birth
  • Where she/he grew up
  • Family life (children, siblings, etc.)
  • Career
  • Goals and aspirations
  • Favorite sports (sports teams)
  • Hobbies
  • Fears
  • Area they currently live in
  • Favorite food (restaurants)
  • Last movie seen or book read
  • Opinion on a current event
  • Favorite television shows
  • Travel

If you’re lucky, your date is able to go on and on about themselves. The good thing is, that most people really enjoy talking about themselves. However, if your date isn’t talkative and gives short answers, you may have a lot more work to do. If you feel you have chemistry, you may have to do more talking about your own life. If there is no connection, I’d suggest cutting the date short with no plans on making another one.

Finally, be natural about your questions. Don’t drill your date as if they are on an interview. Have fun with the process of getting to know each other. One question will lead to another in casual conversation. As you both begin to talk, the more comfortable you will feel. I’m sure you will even find that the two of you will have the occasional fits of laughter. It should be a fun experience so keep things light. You should have no problem keeping the conversation going.
